Oh I’m sure other counties in NYS will follow suit like Westchester County and perhaps Rockland. They’re strapped for cash and are contemplating this idea. I absolutely hate when suburbs attempt to copy the same blatant revenue generating robbery tactics of urban cities. What’s the point of moving out of NYC then if you’re subjected to the same stupidity on suburban roads where they will shorten the yellow light duration to create situations in which motorists think they can make the yellow, but get caught with the cam as the light changes to red midway through the intersection as it does in NYC? This stupidity is only getting worst.
Roger,
Each camera generates $2 to $3 million a year. This kind of revenue is hard for cash-strapped municipalities to ignore. Unless local government cut spending and practice more fiscally conservative policies, these types of programs will continue to proliferate.
This is really bad. I have already got two tickets – one is for turn RIGHT without stop on red light. So any chance we can fight back ?
Oliver,
There very few defenses which will work.
Here is the list: Unexpected mechanical failure in car; your car was used by someone who stole it from you, unexpected medical condition, medical emergency, and broken traffic signal.
Do you know who Suffolk County contracted with to install, maintain red light cameras and issue citations? I would love to know who the contractor is. I think they are in Colorado. Thanks.
Marilyn,
I will try and find this information out for you.
Matt
Marilyn, you are apparently write. Violators are instructed to remit payment via mail to the Suffolk County Red Light Safety Program at PO Box 1730, Denver, CO 80201-1730. They do not provide any more info for the company, however, in the Notice of Liability. Perhaps, the customer service number at 866-637-0008 can provide you with the company’s name and physical address. I hope this helps.
Hello,
I was coming down from 454 eastbound but was entering the right lane by mistake onto motor parkway but turned out back onto 454 eastbound and suddenly a light flashed. The light going 454 eastbound was still fully green (not even about to turn yellow). Did I just get a ticket?
Thanks,
Ally
Ally,
I doubt it. Camera tickets in Suffolk are only being issued to drivers that disobey certain red lights at certain intersections. From your above description, it does not sound like you committed such an offense. Of course, if you did, you’ll know if a few weeks when you receive a “love letter” in the mail.
Matt
Hi traffick Lawyer, I believe I just got a ticket over by the ramp by 110 or 109 i forget which one is which over by southern state in farmingdale. It was during this torrential rain and I was going to fast to stop for the yellow and as I got into the intersection it turned red and I saw it flash, although I tryed to stop before, I skidded half-way through and got nervous and sped through during the yellow. Is there anyway that I can fight this? thanks Tom.
Tom,
From your description, it does not sound you have a viable defense. I would pay the $50 rather than fight it.
Either way, good luck.
Matt
I was in Suffolk on the South service road and the camera flashed on my vehicle. There was a blizzard and I began skidding all over before the light flashed. Is it more important that I crash. There was nothing that I could do. Will I get a ticket for this?
If the photograph depicts your plate, then you will get a ticket. However, the blizzard conditions may make your plate un-readable. If you do get a ticket, I would plead not guilty and submit evidence of the adverse weather conditions. Good luck.
Fight back! I just got a ticket on Ronkonkoma Ave and the North Service Road for not making a complete stop when turning right on red!! Buy Photoblocker spray. It’s not a scam, it’s works and some states have already banned it.
Jack,
FYI: Photoblocker is illegal in New York.
Hi, What is the timing for the yellow light? I counted between 4 and 5 seconds when light changed from green to yellow to red. There is no way to stop if you are going 50 and are close to the traffic light. To me this is a set up to catch as many people as they can. I almost wish to come to red light so I don’t have to worry about getting a ticket or being hit from behind. Is it legal to allow only few seconds to clear the intersection?
Maggie,
Yellow lights should be 2 to 3 seconds in the yellow phase according to NYC DOT regulations. Anything less is too quick.
So is making a right on red on Commack RD and the LIE intersection illegal? There’s no sign for no right on reds.
Ryan,
If there is no sign prohibiting a right on red, it is legal to do so. Keep in mind, however, that you must come to a complete stop (all 4 wheels stop moving) prior to making the right turn.
I was sent a ticket in the mail. I was ticketed on thanksgiving! my car is registered in florida. I didnt come to a complete stop while making a right on red! what will happen if i dont pay this, I realy didnt know the area! the road was slick. And I wasnt driving. Why was I ticketed!
Richard, it sounds like you received a red light camera ticket. This ticket carries 0 points and only a $50 fine. We recommend just paying this ticket rather than fighting it.
I dont think they have done enough to inform the public about these cameras. I have been making sure to stop at yellow lights in order to avoid going through a red only to hear the screech of tires behind me. The car behind me thinks I am going to go through and when I stop I almost get rear ended. This is especially scary on wet roads and now icy roads as winter is here. I can take my chances and go through that yellow light or take my chances with the car on my tail. Just wished the guy behind me knew about the cameras and was going to stop.
Mary,
Tailgating motorists are always a problem. My best advice is to slow down earlier as you approach an intersection so you can get the trailing motorist to also slow down. This should minimize the likelihood of getting rear-ended.
